In France the highway code prescribes a minimum distance when overtaking cyclists (1 m in town and 1.5 m on the road).
Alas the practice is quite different. Cars are dangerously close to us in town and on the road
There is the bicycle Danger Retractor. Unfortunately the length of the commercial ones is ridiculously short. Therefore, without a saddlebag, the effect is already almost nil. The end of the spreader does not even reach the width of the handlebars.
When riding a bicycle, the spreader does not protrude beyond the bags. So legal spreader or nothing it's the same result: the vehicles graze us shamelessly.
Having read on the web about the positive effect of extending the retractor, we have followed and improved this idea:
Result:
The small mechanical device is hinged, with springs for bistable support:
… and after processing
It may seem insignificant, but the effect is HIGHLIGHTFUL..
Vehicles very often overtake us beyond the legal distance.
And if other vehicles arrive in the opposite direction, they wait behind the possibility of overtaking us.
Obviously the possibility of scratching the body of their car is a greater deterrent than the risk of knocking over the cyclist!
CONGRATULATIONS
TO THE CAR PUSHER
The detail of the do-it-yourself solution of the mechanism is HERE.
