Our search for accommodation in Austria was unsuccessful. In contrast to other countries, English is not widely used. In addition, the hotels we contacted were all fully booked. The problem is that this part of the Danube is very busy. The hotels sell a large part of their rooms to bicycle tour operators. Luckily we came across a magazine where an article was published about the offers of packaged tours by La Bicyclette Verte, and surprise a Danube proposal. This is what we have chosen. They were very kind and very slightly adapted their package to us, because we wanted to stay 2 days in Vienna without having to change hotel.
NOTE : THE DANUBE? TO THE BLACK SEA?
For years we were very tempted to travel the Danube in its entirety. With our hikes of 2008 (described in this page) et 2012 (along the Danube River from Budapest to Vienna and described here), so we made the route from Donaueschingen (the source) to Budapest… But we will leave it at that.
Indeed we have read and heard many disillusioned comments about the vicissitudes encountered by cyclists beyond Budapest.
he problems are numerous, some of them serious. We can mention for example the great difficulties of accommodation, the very high risk of cars colliding with cars (beyond Hungary), bites or falls by stray dogs (in Romania), the fact of being used as pasture for clouds of mosquitoes (Danube delta)…
We know from experience that people like to talk about their successes and little about their failures. It's the same with travel, with hiking. Cyclists like to highlight the beautiful rides, and often silence the less beautiful ones.
Considering all the negative feedback it is that really this part is contrary to the PLEASURE-BY-BIKE… we will not go beyond Budapest.
